How do you get a almost 9 yr old to learn the imporantance of brushing her teeth?

She almost 9 and does not really brush her teeth wen u tell her how unpleasent it is to have bad breath she jus smirks and gives a crooked smile then when u tell her about cavities and loosing teeth and yellow teeth she stil just laughs and really dont pay attention.

How do you get a almost 9 yr old to learn the imporantance of brushing her teeth?
Don't allow her to eat candy or drink soft drinks on the days that she hasn't brushed her teeth.
Reply:wish i knew! i have to beg my 13 yr old too!
Reply:show her some pics online of cavities, plaque, gingivitis, gum disease. That might scare her into brushing.
Reply:^^ what she said (show her pictures)

if that doesnt work .....

pfft, let her get a cavity then. tell her how they use a big fat drill and fill her tooth up with metal because it rotted out. If she still *smirks*, let her get one.
Reply:Take her to the dentist and have her listen intently to a child screaming in the patient chair while getting their teeth drilled and filled. Also let her know how incredibly painful those shots in the mouth are. To me those shots in the mouth are the worst pain ever. My son is 7 and he has nice white cavity free teeth. And it's because I scare him with my dental stories.
Reply:Show her this website, and tell her how gross it is and how PAINFUL dentistry can be:

Reply:show her pics of peeps that don't brush her teeth and ask her if she wants to be like that. if that doesn't work, then, well, you're on your own.
Reply:I have a 13 yo that's the same, the trouble is I have taken him to the dentist several times and the dentist said he has no cavities and either his diet is good or he's very lucky and has great teeth. I said try the second reason!

I ask him everyday to brush his teeth and it goes in through one ear and out the other
Reply:You can also tell her that her mouth is very important to the rest of her body. Do one of those did you know kind of questions.. Like did you know that if a person does not have healthy gums and teeth, that it can affect the rest of her bodily organs, like your heart, and immune system? It's realy true. I've worked in the medical field for some time and healthy teeth and gums are essential to a healthy life.
Reply:I'm taking nutrition classes in college and we are learning about tooth decay. This is what you need to do: search the internet for images of gum disease/dental decay and print them out. Then, show her the pictures and explain that the same thing will happen to her if she doesn't brush. Also...explain that all of the plaque in her mouth has bacteria breeding in it and that if she swallows too much bacteria she will get sick - it can lead to heart disease and other horrible things. Scare tactics work nicely with pre-teens!
Reply:Show her pictures of people who have major problems due to lack of brushing.
Reply:Don't make her. She'll get cavities. She'll have stinky breath and get teased. She'll learn.

Failing that, let her closely examine the mouth of someone with bad oral hygiene.
Reply:Go out and buy bubba or hillbilly teeth and put them in her mouth o she can see what she'll look like when shes older(lol).OR buy her one of those music toothbrushes so she knows she'll have a fun time while brushing! Also supervise her and maybe brush your teeth together so shes thinking if I go through this torture, you do to!There are plaque bugs on everyoes teeth and make it very clear to her that if she doesn't brush the bugs will still be there. At the end of each month,if you make sure that she brushes her teeth everyday,go to Toys-R-Us!Hope I helped!!
Reply:well don't let her brush her teeth and when her teeth get all ugly and yellow thats her ugly *** fault.
Reply:Obviously she doesn't want to.

It's her own fault.

People will laugh at her in her dreams.

%26amp; will not go near her because she will smell like she hasn't showered %26amp; brushed her teeth since she was born.

%26amp; then they'll throw garbage at her %26amp; mentally abuse her.
Reply:i hated to brush my teeth as a kid. the tooth paste always burned and my gums would bleed. every single time no matter what. it wasnt untill i started to get my own toothpaste and brush that i didnt mind. and cavities are not pleasnt but its not the end of the world either. take her to the store and pick out the travle tubes to find a taste she donsnt mind and get fun brushes.
Reply:Okay tell her to try this, lick her hand and smell it. If this is not enough to convince her, explain to her that others will find her offensive and pick on her. Kids can be cruel
Reply:My mom's 13 year old stepson is the SAME way. He goes so long without brushing his teeth they turn that buttery yellow color. My mom even got that mouthwash that turns the plaque all blue so he could see what's on his teeth. Didn't work. How the boy has never had cavities or abcess teeth I'll never know.

I'll tell you what has worked though and it may seem mean but it I promise it worked. He has a lot of friends that come over and other people come over that he really respects and admires, when my mom notices his teeth are yellow she'll say something to him about it IN FRONT OF his friends and those people. She will embarrass him to no end about it and usually he'll continue to brush his teeth for a long time, but then he'll slip and she'll have to do it again.

What your neice needs is to get one good BAD toothache and have to deal with it for a few days before going to the denist with it. That straightened me up as a kid.
Reply:When I was 9 I brushed my teeth about every 7 months so once a year
Reply:You start teaching them when they're about a year old by brushing their teeth for them and teaching them how themselves as they get older. Starting at nine is a little late.
Reply:Show her pictures of what can happen in the long run. Take her to the dentist for a cleaning. Must kids (%26amp; adults) hate the sound of the drill they use during the cleaning.
