Lol-thank you for answers re:hamster teeth however....?

your answers regarding brushing do not explain why other animals like cats, dogs and monkeys have white teeth, as far as I am aware cats dont brush their teeth with colgate either...I thought it was to do with enamel on rodents teeth being yellow due to the compostion being softer as they are continually growing (unlike ours)..though as no-one else has come up with that answer I must be wrong"

The color of tooth enamel is frequently due to diet. Beavers have bright orange incisors probably due to their gnawing on tree bark. One assumes the tree resin works its way into the enamel. The walrus feeds on clams and has white tusks. There are a few which hunt seals however, and they can be identified by having yellow tusks. The teeth of gorillas become blackened as they develop cavities. This is due to a bacteria which converts carbohydrates into acidic chemicals which eat into the enamel. Human teeth will behave the same way. Many carnivores have yellowish teeth because of their high protien diets. However, some sea lions in zoos develop blackened teeth and I suspect it is because they are given "dog biscuits" as treats. The biscuits are high in carbohydrates such as starch.

The enamel on a rodent's teeth is present only on the side of the tooth facing out. This allows the back edge to wear more quickly and makes the edge of the tooth very sharp.
Reply:perhaps it's sumthin to do with their diet, what they eat maybe... dogs get dentist things anyway, dunno about cats?!
Reply:It all depends on diet. My german shepherd sophie likes apple pie and she has icky yellow teeth from that much sugar, wheras my brother's ridiculous yorkshire eats only eukanuba and has a fresh breath and pearly whites. In humans, people that have a balanced diet have cleaner and whiter teeth than those that chug 2L of pepsi or 2 cups of coffee a day and so on, not to mention people that smoke. it's all about what goes into your mouth. Change the hamster's diet to an all greens diet and you'll see its teeth whitening slowly, might take a few months tho.
