What's a good way to clean your dogs teeth?

I've noticed some of her teeth becoming yellow and was wondering if anyone can tell me a really good way of cleaning them without causing her to move around alot. She's a german shep and gets annoyed when I check her teeth. Thanks.

What's a good way to clean your dogs teeth?
Pet stores carry these special type of bones that are supposed to help clean your dogs teeth. They help remove the plaque that builds up on them.

But to actually brush them, try the sight below for some tips!

Reply:look at the pestore, or even walmart/costco etc... they make these little dog bones that the dogs chew on...but they are Dental Bones... im not sure the exact name i think maybe its Pedegree? anyways they work well. helps keep their stinky breath away too lol :) but remember its normal for dogs teeth to get kinda yellow! they dont brush them like us!
Reply:You may have to take her in to the vet for cleaning if it has gotten really bad.

ROutinely however, stop by the pet store, they sale pet toothpaste and brushes you can use routinely.
Reply:i get my dog's cleaning done at a vet in pasadena, california
Reply:Try a toohbrush and some doggie tooth paste. They make flavors that dogs like plus human tooth paste may not be so good for them. If that doesn't work you can take you dog to get her teeth cleaned professionaly. It also helps their teeth if you give them treats that also help clean their teeth.

Good Luck!
Reply:with a tooth brush ..... that is what i do for my dogs !!
Reply:they make the bones for dogs to chew on and they help maybe not as good as brushing but they do help

thanks again
Reply:I have heard that greenies and raw hide bones can cause problems with digestion, although they are good for their teeth--so I would keep a close eye on her if you give her either of these. If you bring her to pet-co or another place that does grooming they can brush her teeth. Otherwise, vets recommend a tooth cleaning once a year. I guess they put them under general anesthetic and do a really extensive cleaning. If she is having problems, I would maybe check with a vet about this procedure. Good luck!
Reply:feed them bones because bones are sort of a dog's toothbrush
Reply:The most effective thing you could do is schedule a teeth cleaning with your Vet and then keep up on the teeth and gums health by using a toothbrush and doggie toothpaste or pet stores sell these disposable covers for your finger that you can brush your dogs teeth with. This will help the dogs teeth stay healthy and white.

Your dog may balk at this but will get used to it if you are consistent. I wouldn't over do it, but we brush our dogs teeth about twice a week. Keeps their breath from getting rank, too.
Reply:There are special doggie toothbrushes on the market that are made of rubber with rubber bristles and slip over your index finger. There's also doggie toothpaste that tastes 'yummy' to dogs. I wouldn't worry as much about a little yellowing. What you need to look out for is the buildup of plaque along the gumline, reddening of the gums, and especially loose teeth.

When you clean her teeth, make sure she's sitting and calm. Be firm and don't show affection if she's misbehaving, that will only encourage her to misbehave. Gently but firmly pull up her lips and begin brushing. If she lets you do this, praise her for it. Add more doggie 'toothpaste' if it helps.

If you still have trouble, some pet stores like PetSmart have a teeth-cleaning service as do some dog salons. You can ask to watch how they do it or just have them do it for you.
Reply:one way that works for my dogs is playing fetch with a lemon. when they bite into it, the citrus does a decent job of keeping their teeth white, and their breath fresh.
Reply:tooth brush
Reply:Buy some dental treat sticks, they help to keep your dogs teeth clean :D
Reply:The easiest and least expensive way to clean a dogs teeth is to let your dog do it himself by feeding him or her carrots. My Vet suggested it. I use baby carrots and a one or two pound bag is very inexpensive and lasts a long time. This will help to elliminate plaque and tartar but is not meant to take the place of a normal teeth cleaning. It also eliviates the mess on the floor or carpeting that some of those bones leave. I only give them to him as a treat. If he gets them all of the time, he may lose his taste for them. We treat carrots as something special.

My Rameses loves them. He will soon be 1 Yr. old and weighs about 70 lbs. He is a baby doll who is an Australian Shepherd / Great Pyrenees mix. He will double in size according to my Vet.
Reply:Bf said vet can clean teeth professionally but I say just get some of those denta-bones dog bones they sell at the store.

There are teeth wiping cloths that are sold for traveling when you can't brush and rinse. If your doggie is tame enough you may be able to use it on him. I don't think it could hurt him as they are meant for people??

I copied the following for you:

It is important to keep your dogs teeth clean. Ideally you would brush them every day, or every other day. Feeding a food meant to clean teeth is also benificial. Medi-Cal makes an Oral Care food, and so does Nutro-Dental care, and Hills has an oral care food. The food is made in a large chunk, that does not crumble when the dog eats it, so his teeth have to go in and out, in and out, of the hard piece of food. If you notice a lot of tartar on your dogs teeth, then you should make an appointment with your Vet for cleaning and scaling.
