My tooth is yellow?

Ok so when I was little I was throwing this glass ball in the air and catching it while i was laying down. my grandma called my name after i threw it in the air one more time and like an idiot i looked at her then looked back up as the glass ball came down and hit me in the mouth. i chipped my tooth then and over time it turned yellow. no bleaching product does anything for it. so 15 years later i go to the dentisit about it and they say they need to do a root canal on the tooth. she told me how the procedure would go and what the do but is that going to get rid of the discoloration? the doctor wouldnt answer me with a straight answer she would just repeat the procedure. is this going to make the yellow discoloration go away?

GO BACK TOTHE DENTIST
Reply:Yes because they will put a crown or cap on it. It will look like a new tooth.
Reply:Yes - the tooth will be covered by a porcelain crown or veneer after the work is done on it, and they'll match it as closely as possible to your other teeth.
Reply:I have a similar tooth, my dog is on a run and her wire caught me in the mouth. My dentist said it is because it killed the nerves but my tooth is fine, he said there is a coating that can be put on it to whiten it! I didn't want to pay for that. I got some over the counter whitening stuff that has a little brush and I just put it on that tooth and I can live with it a little yellow.
Reply:A root canal won't change the color of the tooth, but it will clean out the inside and get rid of the dead or dying nerve inside that is causing the tooth to change color. The nerves in the teeth with this sort of history of trauma can go bad at any time, and when it does, it starts to break down and release pigments into the surrounding dentin and enamel. The only way to get the color back to normal is to either bleach the tooth from the inside (internal bleaching), or to cover it up with a crown. Most root canal treated teeth are usually crowned because the procedure, although it allows you to save the tooth, does leave the tooth more fragile and brittle than before. Hence, the crown.
